Product Review: Stun Master Stun Guns

Last week I was asked to review a product from AAA Safety First, and was given a choice of a handful of their self defense products to choose from.
I went for the max. Gotta love this gig.
I've had my share of defensive training, but mostly in lethal force. While I've used different forms of chemical weapons, I can't remember a time there wasn't a 'blowback' factor in some getting on myself or unintended bystanders due to windage.

Yesterday a box arrived, carrying the 'Stun Master Hot Shot' you see here. Pictures are one thing, but putting this in your hand's another. I ended up waiting until this morning to give it a test run in the field.

I was able to carry the model throughout my travel until arriving at work. Leaving work, same thing until getting home. I tried different ways of having it available:
  • in an open section of my zippered lunch bag
  • between my hand and my bag strap with my bag over my shoulder
  • my hand in my pocket with enough finger room to turn it on before drawing it if needed
  • and finally positioning it on my belt with the mini clip recessed in it's back side.
  • All forms of carrying this model in a position making it available for immediate use and deployment met with great results, save one:
...the metal clip on the back isn't big enough for regular waste belt wear. If you're looking for this type of deployment, you'll need to look at the bigger models that are designed for belt wear.
Of course, there's the 'stun' that had to be checked out. While I may joke around on the blog and with friends, I'm not stupid.

The box and the site make it plainly clear how much power this thing gives off. I've got experience with electricity welding for years in the past.

The shot at the right was taken moment's ago without flash. Due to the constant arc changes in current, there's no way to focus. There's no describing the sound when your up close to it holding it.
It's not something you want to be near when someone else is holding one near you. Even when near a trusted person holding it, people instinctively step back appropriately when it's activated.
Would I recommend this? Absolutely without hesitation, but I would only do so with telling the person NOT to rely solely on a tool for their personal protection! Too many people simply buy a product, feeling safe when they honestly don't know anything about personal security, their limits, or a potential attackers weaknesses.

Jack Krohn is the man behind the site at AAA Safety First. When you visit the site, he's got a popup that asks if you want to be put on his mail list to receive tips and information about personal safety. I've personally added my email address, and recommend anyone interested in personal protection of their person do likewise if they lack training and education in this matter.

Lastly...if you get one of these...don't sit around looking at it and clicking the button to hear the sound and see the light. You'll waste energy for when you might need it...but it's still okay to go in the bathroom and play 'Dirty Harry'.
    ...not that I ever do.
Was this a long post? Yep. Know why?
CAUSE I GOT A FREAKIN' STUN GUN, BABY! Thanks, Mr. Krohn! WOO HOO!
