Caseworker Ninja Toolbox: 1800NODRUGS

One of the biggest barriers people experiencing homelessness can't overcome is drug addiction. I've seen so many people over the years experiencing homelessness, as well as becoming more aware about drug abuse than ever in my life. It's horrifying to know a friend could fall prey to their life destroyed or taken in the pursuit their mind and body demands their next fix from.

In Jacksonville, there's resources that are available to people to get off drugs. The problem in many cases though is that these businesses are very unfriendly towards those that are proactive and attempting to get help. Many people reaching out at the critical point and time frame for help are treated like numbers too often. The opportunity to immediately determine if they need to be inpatient treated usually isn't taken when it could be, and within hours an addict will be off on their own while one of their supporters of habit hands them a stem.

1800nodrugs.com is a free service that addicts can call to get someone to do the legwork in getting them the help they need. They don't charge anything, listen, and network and connect people wanting to get off drugs to the places that do.

When an addict makes the choice of getting clean and into drug rehab, they're not dealing with the same faculties as people not on drugs. They're still affected by the drugs which affect their judgement and choices. They don't have the ability to shop around on the phone, or mystery shop dozens of potential agencies.

They need help, and they need it fast. They don't need a receptionist with an attitude, they don't need hourly paid administrative employees trying to get them away from their desk. They need to be screened quickly, matched to real services who can really help, and the financial needs must be met to cover the cost.

That's the catch! Money. Drug rehab agencies must get money to operate. If they don't get it, they can't continue to clean up addicts. That's the glowing thing about 1800nodrugs.com...they get people without money hooked up to get help!

Their site has an online form that does the same thing that every single agency I've seen does on intake: a financial application. No, it's not accessing your bank information, it's simply information a person gives so an agency knows up front where they need to apply for the funds to help a person.

I could go on and on, but it won't help anyone if they don't quit reading this and make the call. If you need help, CALL THEM!

If you're a case manager or other service provider to people experiencing homelessness, do NOT close this site page until you have written that number down.

If you don't and your client dies in the gutter, nobody will know you could have let him call in your office...will they?
